I had the opportunity recently in a class to write and confront this last year. I took it.
Spiral Farm (2019)
★★½ – A transient drama concerning our worlds and the worlds we have yet to know.
Greyhound (2020)
★★½ – As the captain and crew of Greyhound scoured for foes, I couldn’t help but feel I was also missing something beneath the surface.
Gettysburg (1993)
★★★½ – More frenetic than a re-enactment, less assuming than a lecture, and even less sentimental than a Hollywood drama.
Hamilton (2020)
★★★★ – Great care went into making this project as cinematic, encompassing, and true as possible.
The Old Guard (2020)
★★½ – The Old Guard, as much as it is dedicated to an explosive popcorn experience, is just as devoted to the compassion holding up the sword.
The Grey Fox (1982)
★★★★ – It’s an adventure as bountiful as any, set in a world where appreciation and innovation left the Wild West behind, but allowed its sentiments to linger a little while longer.
Hammer (2020)
★★★½ – Hammer possesses such a strong understanding of its characters that if its half-dead catalyst was sprawled out in their living room instead of a cornfield, the heart behind the decisions wouldn’t flake.
Shirley (2020)
★★½ – While Shirley’s quest to irk is regularly fulfilled and Elisabeth Moss shines as the titular author, the pretentious pomp of the onscreen academics and the overall lack of thrills makes this “thriller” a promising dud.
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods is a movie whose modern envelope minces empathy and excitement within the unsung sacrifice of the African American soldier.
